Point Comfort Art Fair + Show

December 5-8, 2019

Hampton Art Lovers Presents a curated panoramic experience at Miami Art Week/Art Basel/Soul Basel at the Historic Ward Rooming House in Overtown. The experience is named “Point Comfort”, after the place in Virginia where the first Africans came ashore in America. Point Comfort will include three connected activities:

Point Comfort Art Fair: DISCOVER the works of contemporary and appreciated artists such as Ernie Barnes, Leroy Campbell, Basil Watson, BUCK!, Phil Shung, Gil Ashby, Krystal Hart, Joel Gresham and Musa Hixson. These will be on sale in a temperature-controlled tent attached to Historic Ward Rooming House. The Art Fair will also host events, including our Indaba Artists Conversations, Music and Cultural Nightlife Events.

*PLEASE NOTE: Due to logistical challenges, Spelman College Museum's collection will not be featured during Art Basel.

We are a proud partner of Soul Basel. Soul Basel was formed to ensure that Black Art and Culture has a place and a home in Miami during Art Basel/Miami Art Week. Soul Basel is centered in Overtown, sometimes known as the “Harlem of Miami”. Soul Basel is sponsored and supported by Miami City Commission Chairman Keon Hardemon, the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (SEOPWCRA) and the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) Art of Black Miami.

We are proud to announce that Writer, Scholar, Public Intellectual and Georgetown University Professor Dr. Michael Eric Dyson is our cultural ambassador. Point Comfort will inspire and engage attendees with a curated cultural experience celebrating our roots. “Point Comfort” is derived from the place in colonial Virginia where the first captives from the West African Kingdom of Ndongo (Angola) arrived in 1619. The people of Ndongo and other African tribes lost their native tongues and many of their traditions here in America. Through tremendous adversity, remnants of these lost traditions continue to express themselves in the song, dance, art and crafts of today's African-American community. Today, African American Art is a leading force in American Fine Art, our mission is to showcase and celebrate its masters and emerging artists.
